I didn't find this book to be as good as Penman's Sunne in Splendor. It was certainly as long, though. It may be because it took me so long to read it, that I lost interest. WCASS is about the battle for the throne between Stephen and Maude. Maude is the rightful heir, but Stephen steals the crown from her before she can claim it. After that, many bloody battles ensue between the two of them. Once Maude realizes that she will never rule, she continues to fight to get he crown for her son. Once Henry and Eleanor of Aquitaine, soon to be Henry II comes into the book, it starts to get interesting. However, that is 3/4 of the way through.
