She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb
This is the second novel that I have read by Wally Lamb. At first I liked it better than I Know This Much is True, but by the end, I'm not sure. Overall, I liked the book, but I thought some parts were a little bit outrageous. She's Come Undone is about Dolores Price who is raped by a family friend when she is a little girl. As a result, she eats herself to over 250 pounds. She also distances herself from her family in the process. Dolores's life is spattered with tragedy. She goes off to college, but of course does not fit in. In the process she has a love affair with the dorm mother and stalks her roommates boyfriend. She eventually tries to kill herself and is committed to a mental hospital. This is where the book gets weird. Her therapy is odd, where the psychiatrist becomes her mother (who is dead) and then she leaves, finds Dante, her college roommate's boyfriend and marries him. Dolores keeps getting hit by tragedy after tragedy. Her marriage inevitably fails, and he Grandmother dies, her last living relative who she loves. Throughout the oddness of the book, I found Dolores a likable character although I think she had a little bit too much strife in her life. The book does take an upturn at the end where Dolores finally falls in love and lives happily ever after. All in all, i liked the book.
